Child Mentoring

Cultivating a relationship with fire

Boy by Campfire

Service Name

Wilderness Skills • Self-Confidence • Connection

I offers one-on-one or very small group (2–3 children) outdoor sessions designed to support children in deepening their connection to themselves, nature, and others.

I believe that expanding awareness, nurturing an intimate relationship with the natural world, and being supported by grounded adults are essential for healthy development and meaningful connection.

Wilderness Skills

Each session includes naturalist knowledge and hands-on wilderness skills. This season, the main focus is fire-making, while remaining responsive to the interests and readiness of each child.

Skills may include:

  • Fire safety and responsibility

  • Lighting a fire with a match

  • Fire-making basics

  • Making fire using forest materials only

  • Friction fire

  • Knife safety

  • And more

If your child is strongly interested in another wilderness skill, we can discuss what is possible.

Self-Confidence

In each session, we will have the opportunity to develop a sense of self-trust through games and guided exercises that expand awareness and strengthen the “body radar,” or intuition; in other words cultivating the inner knowing. Strengthening this inner guidance nurtures confidence, creativity, and a deeper sense of trust in oneself.

Skills & activities we might do:

  • Bird language

  • Blind folded exercise

  • Expending our awareness

  • Making fire by themselves

Connection

Each session includes simple, grounding routines that help build connection to self, nature, and others.

These may include:

  • Songs and music

  • Gratitude practices

  • Stories

  • Sit spots

  • Wanders and exploration

  • Naturalist studies

My Approach

My mentoring style is inspired by the Coyote Mentoring model. It is a holistic, curiosity-driven approach to learning that differs from conventional education.

I support children in discovering their own capacity to learn. A child may ask a question, and I may respond with another question. I follow their curiosity and natural rhythm, while gently encouraging growth when trust has been established. All learning is held with care, respect, patience, love, and compassion.
